Search Engines: What Do They Really Want


What is a search engine? Search engine is like a library, it catalogs all the information or web pages on the web. There are billions of pages on the web and more every minute. Search engines use software programs known as robots, spiders or crawlers. A spider can hyperlink from one page to the next discovering new blogs or websites and sends the information back to the main site to be indexed. They also update previously catalogued sties. How fast a spider can do this totally depends on the search engine.

Who is the biggest search engine of them all? Well Google claims it index over 3.3 million pages, while Yahoo’s Alltheweb.com has 3.1. Search engines like AskJeeves requires a payment to index sites, so they have a lot less.

A search engine is an index that lets you seek out information by specific words or phrases. When you are researching a niche or specific keyword to write a post about make sure you are detailed in your post. A lot of words have double meanings and if you are writing about tops you could get ads and searches for toys or clothing.

Search Engines:

Yahoo’s directory, Google directory and Open Directory Project are directories that search on a subject or topic. If you know exactly what you are looking for this is a good place to start.
Google uses technology that considers web pages or a post that is linked to be more important than those that have fewer links from others sites. High ranked sites are those Google considers more important or valuable.
Yahoo’s Alltheweb is relatively one of the newer search engines and claims that it is faster and more efficient than other search engines, with the largest index and the most rapid look-up times. AltaVista is also owned by Yahoo and provides excellent search capabilities.
Lycos one of the original web search engines was bought by a Spanish company and is now called Terra/Lycos with the focus more European.
HotBot was at one time the fastest search engine, but has lost its popularity over the years. It is still good for business and professional services if you are tracking down information about a specific person.
Excite was a concept-oriented search engine that is now web history, but still maintains a website and directory.

What do search engines really want from your website?

The best way to get people to find your site is to provide useful, well-organized, well-written, well-designed information in your posts or web pages. Use keyword research to find your niche or subject matter. Remember Google loves it when people who find your site and link to it, or share it with social sites or their friends, the more visitors you'll have. Word of mouth (actually, word of email) is very powerful on the Web!
